Grinded down to the fin marks.

Here is a shot of the older fins standing up against the new ones...I had to swap out the olders smaller fins for the larger ones with more surface area. I has having big troubles with the board sliding out on the bottom turns...hopefully these new ones will give the board the little extra hold it needs.

Again you can see the old fin laying up on the new ones.

The new fins were made using the original side bite template that Andrew Kidman took off of his own board "The Crush". They were sent to me via snail mail about a year ago. With the perspective surf on the way I thought this might be a nice opportunity to get this board back in the water. I'll sink her into some turns over the next few days and report back... Stay tuned

This is the newest model to come out of my shaping bay. I made this little gem for my buddy Juan after he and I were geeking out on the new Dane Reynolds "Neck Beard". I've already made another 2 of them but this one weighs in at 5'8 x 19 x 2.25" . If all goes well "The White Out" will work great for anything from knee high to 2 feet over head with a proclivity for doing rail turn cutbacks with tons of speed. It features a big single concave to a panel V out of the tail, Chopped Square tail, low rocker overall with a little flip in the nose and a modern box rail. We named it "The White Out" because after signing and drawing on the board Juan painted over every bit of pencil work with white paint. This will be getting glassed and finned in the next 2 weeks.

With the idea of peeling the winter skins off and the fact that summer is nipping at our heels I couldn't help myself but to assess my summer quiver. I began to revisit my notes in regards to the aurora and I came to the realization that I had to push the envelope and evolve the original prototype. With the Lord boards heavy on the mentals I took most of the design ideas from the Lord/Simmons theory. With the help of my buddy Simon (featured above) the aurora ii features a flatter bottom, flatter rocker in both the nose and tail, 2 extra channels and a wider tail, the aurora ii was born. I'll be testing this board over the next couple months so I'll have to report back with the progress.

"A boy named Sue". A 6'2 Diamond tail widow maker I shaped and painted this board while listening to "Live from San Quentin" album over and over and over.... the board was named "Sue" for obvious reasons. This was shaped and painted during a session with Takashi and Junko today for a piece they are working on for Blue Magazine. Stay posted for more progress on the board. I will be documenting the whole process.

Long Tip Keel. I shaped, painted and made the fins for this board. It was all done for a friend of mine by the name of Bisse. He's a wacky guy from Sweden with and extraordinary personality. I wanted to do something extra special for him so I gave it a little more then usual. I even made the call to do one black future fin box and one white one (the peg leg). I had a lot different feelings and emotions while shaping this board. I feel that this is one of the most honest boards I've ever done. By honest I mean I did exactly what I felt like doing. No holding back. From shape to brush stroke and it was all a surprise. Bisse didn't know what to expect and when he arrived in NY I just put it in his hands. I was relieved when the grin on his face stretched from ear to ear. It was an exciting day for the both of us.

Fine lines drawn in by Mr. Mick Mackie. Lines proply erased by the churning wash that trails. Only a few moments immortalized. Mick is the regular footed chap on the black railed blade surfing the rights. Master craftsman, creative genius and a brilliant surfer. "He's a legend" as Ank would say. If anyone is a legend in his eyes they are a legend in mine. A head nod to a fellow craftsman in a similar pursuit. Respect.

Take a closer look. Keone on the Grey Ghost prototype "808" HP longboard. I never make longboards because I don't really ride them, but my good buddy Keone does and really well i might add (as seen above). So I made him what we called the "808". Its a hard edged, modern box railed, high performance, tri fin long board. Keone is notorious for snapping his boards because no matter the conditions he always rides longboards and always aims straight for the barrel. I've yet to see a barrel that homeboy shied away from either. It seems to me that the more dredging and unwelcoming the barrel is, the more interested Keone is on sitting inside of it! Ha! We glassed this one a bit heavier and cut the laps a bit wider in hopes that it wouldn't break. I'll keep you posted.

My buddies Johnny Knapp (White), Juan Jose Heredia (Pink) shreaded the Brooklyn team to victory at the 5 boro surf contest this weekend. Juan was riding his trusty little Quevz

Juan as seen above, applying for dual citizenship of Brooklyn and Queens. Those of you who know me know I grew up living between Brooklyn and Queens. The 5 Boro NYC contest puts a bi-boro fellow like myself in a difficult position. With one foot rooted in BK and the other in QB its hard for me to figure out what team to go for in a battle of the boroughs contest, especially when friends are surfing on both teams, head to head, riding my boards. Ha! Even though Juan "Quevz" Heredia and Johnny Knapp took it for Brooklyn and Queens did lose, Chris Caiazzo was shredding hard on the Duster Bouglass. In the end all the matters is "Reppin ya boro!" If theres a bar of wax sold in the park, I want in!

Ducksworth. Sitting in a rare roped off area of my mind, where only the realest of real remain. The realm where I place few, I've added Ducksworth. The residents of this area get a special kind of nod from me. Those few I speak of have earned massive respect, credit and admiration from me. Luckily, I also consider most of them friends.

Ducksworth started as a label for various quality goods, but once you get into the roots of it, it becomes so much more then that. Aaron Ginsberg, creator and president has used Ducksworth as a venue to display his creative genius. At heart Ducksworth is a designer and fine artist. The most interesting thing to me is that his work says more then just cool colors and attractive designs. The stories embedded in the designs are almost more interesting then the designs themselves. Ducksworth and I have teamed up to collaborate on a few things. Keep a look out for the Ducksworth x Grey Ghost creations.

The fall and winter ended up being pretty generous to us this year. Of coarse Andrew and the rest of the Kidman family were in town long enough to get more than a taste of some of the best surf we've had in a year or two. However with the Kidman clans departure was the departure of a swell streak as well. We had weeks of flatness after that. The ocean felt the same way we did I guess. The photos above are of the notorious Quevz of the flesh and foam kind. Getting it in. Pre winter 2009.

During his 3 month stay in New York, Andrew Kidman found some time to come over to the "clam shack" aka "the casino" (my shaping room) to work with me on some boards. Andrew Kidman is more than just a talented film maker he's an amazing shaper, surfer, musician, photographer, writer and philosopher. In between playing music, surfing, making artwork, writing and eating lox bagels we had a lot of time to work on boards and talk about design. AK's ethos, design theory, shaping techniques, and fine eye for detail is derived from his mentors, Simon Anderson, Dave Parmenter and Pat Curren. Its been fascinating to hear and watch his approach to everything from doing a cutback to turning a rail and doing channels. The first two boards we made together were two Widow Makers with channel bottoms. One for me. The other for my mate Franco who was also there helping every step of the way. Before we started these boards AK called Parmenter to let him know what we were doing and he was not only stoked that we were making Widow Makers but he even gave us specific details to run by. Things like this always amaze me and excite me. Here you have Dave Parmenter (the guy who designed and invented the Widow Maker) helping AK help me, giving us details and guidelines in order to recreate his design and he's stoked!! I guess being from New York you always expect someone NOT to help you and when two people who I hold in such high regard are here helping facilitate my techniques and enhance my experience is truly a sign of how humble they both are. The following has been a product of our work together.(The posts will be titles Widow Maker)

Pat "The Rat" Conlon getting a little shade from the sun on the proto-type Popsicle. Pat and I are super pleased with the way this board has been going so far. It makes the best of small junky summer waves but he has also ridden it in larger hollow waves without skipping a beat. The board is a great all-rounder. The popsicle is slowly becoming the gold standard in a serious NY board quiver. Look out for more popsicles coming out of the Casino.

Its been a while since my last post huh? .....Sorry about that. I've just been busy shaping and/or sick. I'm better now and will be regularly posting.

The specimen shown above is a new model I'm working on called "The 5 Percenter". (Thanks for the name Franco!) This is the first one so far but I'm working on another one in EPS now. Its 5'5 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/4 It features a fairly hard edge throughout the whole board for a little extra bite and response through turns. Its also going to be setup with 5 FCS fusion plugs for an option for quad. I managed figured out a harmonious fin placement for the board to work properly as a quad and thruster without effecting one or the other in a negative way, however the placement seems to only work best on the smaller boards.

Malcolm Campbell

Malcolm Campbell along with a few other shapers I hold in extremely high regard, has done nothing but inspire and influence me in more ways then just shaping surfboards. His philosophy on life and his passion for the art of surf craft really hits home with me. Malcolm Campbell in my eyes is a the gentle giant of the surfboard world. Having been the innovator of The Bonzer bottom and fin setup, he opened many doors for shapers after him and he reserved himself a spot in the history of surfing. Yet he remains as humble as can be. Give credit where credit is due, and to you Malcolm I tip my hat. Thank you.

"The Popsicle". Shaped a while back. It came together through collaborative efforts between Pat "The Rat" Conlon and I. The Popsicle was our answer to "The Wizard Sleeve". The Wizard Sleeve was that board that Slater shaped himself and surfed in Micronesia on that boat trip a couple months back when he earned himself a the cover of Surfing Mag back in May 09. That board evolved further and Kelly ended up blowing minds when he rode another version of the original Wizard Sleeve at Backdoor (The original was 5'3 and the one Kelly rode at backdoor was 5'10). Anyhow we tweaked it to our preference and our local waves. Anyhow it is continuously being pushed and the results are quite pleasing! Its can handle itself real well in a hollow wave as well perform excellent in summer time surf. We are super stoked on what the board has been able to do. Pat put the board in the hands of the triple world title holder Andy Irons and according to Pat, Andy loved it! Not quite six oh!

This little ashy number is the newest edition to my buddy Juans quiver. From the minds of Malik Jazz, much thought, conversation and collabortaion was devoted into the shape. The contours and rockers, were premeditated and the rails and tail shape revealed themselves in moment. Not quite the quevz model and not quite six'0 this board is 5'11.5 x 18.75 x 2 3/8 with a tapered cedar stringer for extra lip slapping action.
Juan and I wanted to experiment with using a lil' bit more foam then your average chip. We have high hopes for this one. I feel like it will be "The Little Engine That Could". This might very well be the 5'11 that you are comfortable taking out when everyone else is riding their six'tens . Ya dig? Foam was distributed and foiled out. The rails are a bit more bally then they appear and they have a little bit of the quevz down rail flavor. This is one of one so far. The search continues....Updates soon.

Blanks are slowly disappearing and there has been an order placed for a ton more. Boards are currently getting candied and polished under the watchful eyes and hands of Ed Fawess, Mike Becker and Mark Petrocelli. Finished products will be ready for the visual stimulus sooon.... until then enjoy a slightly different visual stimulus.

During our magic little swell this past friday Quevz the Ghost face himself was making it happen in front of the lens while Tommy "Wave Dancer" was making it happen behind it. Big ups to Tommy for snapping some amazing photos.

Quevz won another contest on the board this weekend too. He took first place in the Masters division at Gilgo beach on saturday and won best two waves of the day. Congrats dude! Represent!

This new Quevz model shaped for my stylish paizan Giuseppe "Frok" Giammona!

Quevz himself has been riding the board and we've been fine tuning it for maximum shredability. He just got back from Mainland Mex with "The Mini Guinea" himself, Chris "Knuckle Head" Caiazzo where they tested the board in the unfriendly black holes for Puerto Escondido. A new harder rail is being applied and the board is ready for the public and the first advocate of the Quevz way is Frok! Thanks dude! Email some photos of you shredding it!

This board is going to be the first generation quevz model that will be outfitted with 5 fin boxes and will have and option for quad.....the experiment continues..

Big ups the Tyler Manson. So far these TSJ / POV videos have been a real treat to watch! Please keep up the good work. This is particular video really struck me. I found it super interesting to see how these guys interact with one another and to see how they approach each board they ride differently. It gives you a better insight into who they are on a regular basis as if the camera wasn't even rolling. Almost like a surfer to surfer version of Iconoclast.

The magic little Quevz model has been working quite well and all parties are please. Juan has been busting on it and giving good feedback. He won the Rockstock contest taking first place in the masters division and has been drumming up inquiries from curious sliders looking to shred like Quevz. Its the surfer not the board....or is it?

Caiazzo, Juan, Tony Farmer, Shawn Roche and I all surfed together the other day in onshore unfriendly conditions but managed to score unexpected pumping and dumping shorey in the [].

Knuckle Head "C" was busting as well. "He shred so hard he bust his stick"...Literally...Caiazzo came off a huge chunky heavy floater and smashed the first 3 inches off his 5'4" The board is now a snub nose 5'1.

Today was a really amazing day. Ventured out to the Nature Shapes showroom where I just had my boards glassed by legendary Long Island surfer and craftsman Ed Fawess. Needless to say the work was tight! After that I headed out to Mastic Beach and met up with Mastic's most Mastastic resident, Lentini, the one and only Deebo (Homeboy is Lost On A Sandbar) and big boy frontiersman Tom who is a decorated fisherman and all around jack of all trades. We waded out at this beautiful little spot and just caught fish after fish for about 2 hours. We ended up with 20 or so blue fish that we later brought back to the Lentini household where we open fire cooked the fish and had frontiersman Tom showed us the ins and outs of filleting a fish and skinning it. I can equate today to a chest high glassy day of surfing. Totally epic.

Today wouldn't be possible without the help and guidance of Deebo and Tom. Much appreciated!

Sorry for the lack of posts over the past week. I just got back into the country form a little get away. Tropical weather and amazing food.....However, No Waves! Which was fine actually because I got to do tons of other cool stuff like scuba dive and explore sunken WWII battleships! I can't say the would've happened if there were waves. Anyway.........I love it when your traditional pro surfer starts to experiment with new things such as adding 3 more fins to his typical setup. I guess Kelly's new love for surf design is rubbing off on the rest of the pack. This is Jordy blasting it! Obviously 6 fins works.......when your that good anything works. JORDY! MAKIN' IT HAPPEN!

The Popsicle

I named this model "The Popsicle". It is a shape that was born from the collaboration between my buddy Pat "The Rat" and I. I basically helped translate Pats vision into physical form. Pat is a local surfer that I've known since I'm a kid. He was like the older brother at my local break.

"The Popsicle"

Features a semi soft rail from nose to about just in front of the fin cluster with a slight edge underneath the roll. The bottom has slight belly in the nose with a shallow single into a deeper double under that back foot going to a rolled V just out the tail. This board will have the option for a few different fin setups. The shape is super versatile and will work with most fin setups. This prototype is going to outfitted with 5 fin boxes to accomplish a few different fin setups such as Thruster, Twin, Twin with a center stabilizer and last but not least quad for drive on the mushiest days.

The knowledge that Blake had back then, of hydro dynamics and hollow hull construction was pretty inspiring.

I shape this board for my buddy Bobby. His son Jack is responsible for the totally awesome lam on the nose. Bobby is an extremely stoked dude and one of the funniest guys I know. To this day he is responsible for the best prank I've ever been a part of. I'll never forget that dude!

I was fortunate enough to have the board passed along to me after Kirk Gee (Mackie's Rep and Consafo's King Pin), RK, TA, Ekstrom and Mark Wolfinger had their way with it. Its now been passed along for me to explore and test. I have to say, I'm completely blow away at the speed you get on this board and its ability to turn on a dime at light speed without even compensating with your style or foot placement.

Since I'm such a light weight I felt the Rasta Keels we're a little too stiff for me and wouldn't allow me to rotate a full 180+ on my cutbacks unless I was going super fast or way down the line. So I made my own fins. These are the experimental rudders I personally hand foiled for the board. I got to test these out in a range of different surf in puerto rico for the past ten days and the verdict is bueno!! I found that they are much more punchy through turns and definitely compliment the flex characteristics of the boards tail. I was able to even hit the lip vertically and the board would just swing itself back around.

This board definitely gets an A++ in my book. If you are fortunate enough to get one of these or find yourself on Micks shaping queue I highly recommend one of his flex tail twin pins!

I have to give a big thanks to Mick, Kirk, RK, and all the others involved in getting this board into my hands. I'm super stoked on it!
